How do you choose the RIGHT photographer?

The process of hiring a photographer of any genre; family, newborn or wedding, it can be a daunting task. But with careful consideration and a strategic approach, you can find the perfect match for your needs.

Here are a few tips that should help you along the way.

  1. Do your research Before making any decisions, invest time in researching potential photographers. The odds are you are on social media so you know what you like and don’t like. Follow them all, chat to them and get a feel for them as people not just how well they take a photograph.

  2. Hire a Genuine Professional: I have heard so many people say, “We got our friends to do it, he’s got a good camera’ and then they say, I wished we had hired a professional. A little slice of life that you can’t replace. Please don't settle for someone who merely "takes photos." Look for a professional photographer with the skills and experience necessary for capturing exceptional shots. They need to understand lighting, be able to be transparent and engage with clients, not to mention be able to see moments happening. Verify their credentials, explore their portfolios, and check reviews. Legitimate photographers often have dedicated websites showcasing their work.

  3. Check Credentials and Experience: Assess the photographer's work for consistency, credentials, education, and experience. While everyone has to start somewhere, opting for someone with a solid background in the field ensures better results. Inquire about their education in art, photography, or photo editing, as this can significantly impact the quality of the final product.

  4. Read Reviews: Thoroughly read online reviews for insights into their past clients experiences. Satisfied clients can provide valuable information about the photographer's strengths and weaknesses, offering a glimpse into the creative process.

  5. Chose a Style That You Love: Visit the photographer's website and social media pages to review their portfolio. Ensure that their photography style resonates with you and what makes you excited.

  6. Get In Touch: Get in touch with your photographer. if it’s over the phone or a FaceTime. You have to make sure you ‘Click’.If its a wedding photography that you’re after, imagine spending the whole day with someone who made you feel uncomfortable and had no chat, it would be awful. And you would remember your day for all the wrong reasons.

  7. Hidden Costs: While cost is a factor, be wary of choosing the cheapest option. Quality often comes at a certain price. Inquire about any hidden fees, ensuring clarity on what the upfront cost includes and whether additional services like editing, prints, or albums incur extra charges. Most professional photographers are happy to discuss cost and have options on payment plans etc.

  8. Safty for Newborn Photography: Whilst Newborn Photography hasn’t really got a governing body and safety standards as such. Every newborn photographer should understand how important it is. Studios should be clean and hygienic. All blankets should be washed after each session. Safety is paramount when holding baby and not putting them into poses that should be composite photos (take two photos and mere them post production) with out support for the babies head.

  9. Insurance: All Professional photographers will have Public Liability and Public Indemnitiy, these are a must. Not only does it show our clients that we are covered if anything was to happen. It also show the we take our job seriously.

I hope that by following these steps and being thorough in your research, you will find a photographer who not only meets but exceeds your expectations, resulting in a collection of stunning, memorable images, that will last a lifetime as will the memories of the shoot itself.
